Disaster Preparedness

STRENGTHENING EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS AT EGS BY INCREASING KNOWLEDGE, AWARENESS, AND CAPACITY

Earthquakes can strike without warning, leaving little time for preparation. To ensure our staff is equipped to handle these emergencies, we organized a comprehensive training focused on preparedness and risk mitigation. The goal was to enhance the safety of our employees and ensure that our business remains resilient, even in the face of disaster. This proactive approach not only prepared us for the unexpected but also strengthened our ability to bounce back and continue operations, no matter the challenge.

He outlined the following three main stages of earthquake preparation essential for survival:

BEFORE AN EARTHQUAKE STRIKES

Key steps to ensure our staff’s safety, security, and preparedness, enabling them to respond effectively when an earthquake strikes.

Preparing Our Workforce

  • Train all the employees on how to respond during an earthquake.
  • Prepare the First Aid Kit for Emergencies
  • Identify safe zones to “drop, cover, and hold on” when shaking begins.
  • Conduct regular, mandatory earthquake drills to reinforce readiness.

Preparing Our Facilities

  • Strengthen the office building to ensure they are safer and more resilient to earthquake damage.
  • Collaborate with local building authorities to understand how long structures have adhered to seismic building codes, ensuring maximum protection.

DURING AN EARTHQUAKE

Crucial actions to take in order to ensure the safety of our staff during a disaster.

Dropping, Covering & Holding On

  • Drop to your hands and knees to stay grounded.
  • Cover your head and neck with your arms, and if there’s no sturdy shelter nearby, crawl to an interior wall away from windows.
  • Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that can fall and cause harm.
  • Hold on tightly to a sturdy covering, ensuring you remain protected and can move with it until the shaking subsides
  • Stay where you are until the shaking stops. Do not rush outside or seek shelter in doorways, as they do not protect you from falling debris or flying objects.
  • Always keep a safe distance from buildings when you’re outside.
  • Only those on the first and second floors are allowed to exit the building safely.

AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

Core steps to ensure a swift, coordinated response and smooth recovery after an earthquake.

Executing Emergency Response & Recovery Plans

  • Quickly Locate the EGS staff and visitors then evaluate their safety and health.
  • Provide immediate treatment and respond to any medical emergencies.
  • Beware of potential aftershocks and continue monitoring the situation.
